Fathi and I met this past friday for our first tutoring session. When we first met, a week ago, he was telling me how he needed to practice his listening skills. He took the TEFOL Test and got the lowest score on the listening section, so he needs to practice inorder to pass. He brought a TEFOL book that had CDs with audio conversations to listen to and practice questions to test comprehension. Truth be told, I had no idea how that tutoring session was going to go before that book. I had no idea what the best way to practice listening is other than to watch a movie or listen to other people talk.
We plugged in the CD and listened to the first track. I noticed he took out some paper and a pen to write notes. The conversations themselves were quite silly. One of them was about cougars; the funny part, it totally sounded like the could have been talking about the women and not the animals. And after laughing a little, I had explain to Fathi what a cougar is these days. Actually he didn't even know what a cougar, the animal, was too.(That's two vocab words in one!)
I saw that he was writing down most of what the conversation was about. After the first track finished, I asked him to summarize what the conversation. He understood and noted almost all of the conversation except the first part, which there happened to be a comprehension question. He did this a second time. I brought it up to him, and he replied that he is so anxious to hear it, that he just misses it. I told him that he just needs to relax and think about the voices and try to concentrate on them.
The third recording we listened too, I asked him not to write notes and just listen. He did pretty good on the comprehension questions, but missed the beginning part again.
Next week, we're going to try listening without notes again and practice listening to the first part of the conversations.
Fatih is my conversation partner and he also told me that he has trouble on the listening portion of the TOEFL exam and he got a lower score than on his first one.
ReplyDeleteI suggested that besides doing practice everyday with it, he should listen to the news or watch tv so he can relax when he listens to Americans speak, I think that would help him significantly.
Great advice Marina, but try to provide him with specific programs, shows, websites, etc., or even better yet, with specific programs, shows, etc. to listen to. See the listening resources and book I sent you guys.
