Jacqi TP1

So yesterday I was tutoring at CIES my two students Somina and Hadir. We tutor together as a group now but I might have to split them up because Hadir is quite advanced in her third session here at CIES and it looking to improve in her reading comprehension, while Somina is looking to work on homework and other miscellaneous task. Something that was interesting to me is that on Tuesday we were talking about cultures, and when to ask about families when there are events on the news. I knew that Hadir is from Libya so when I asked about her family on Wednesday she seemed to appreciate that I asked about them. I then learned that her family lives in a city that is literally in the middle of this war and while she is worried about them she is not letting that distract her from her studies. I found it inspiring since the worst thing in my life is my dead end job at Steak and Shake and the only thing that keeps me up at night is what will I do when I graduate. It just inspired me to do my best this last semester because the problems I am going through could always be a lot worse.

  1. I can imagine it must be tough for those people to live with the fact that their families may or may not be hurt in any way by the effects of the wars and revolutions that are going on in the Middle East right now. I think it's good to ask them how they are doing and show compassion in such tough times.

  2. I think this was a good thing to remind us to do. When Ramin mentioned it in class I had realized I haven't asked my CP about his family nearly at all. So I took his advice and your experience and I realized the appreciation is real.

  3. These students do a good job helping us to put things in perspective.

  4. That must be difficult to come here to study and then have revolution break out where you live.
