Nikolas - CO2
Last Tuesday (I am behind with my blog posts!), I visited Olga Garmash's Intermediate Speaking Class. I had interest to see how this would be organised. First, a student held a presentation about survey about foreigners in Tallahassee (this is apparently something they did and one present every class) and why they are here, etc. Students filled out worksheets with questions on them. Then Olga announced that the week's topic would be pulic service announcements and they would present their own on Friday. But first an activity: the students were divided into partners and given sample classified ads for jobs. They practice interviews with each other, then each group chooses one ad to present to class. Then they must work as group at table to discuss qualifications for job with help from vocabulary list, then present this. One position was for volunteer with non-profit organisation. The students knew nothing about this, so it was explained and tied to public service announcements. The students read the ads again and are helped with unfamiliar words. One of jobs was to care for old people, so that lead to questions about how this is done in their own countries. For homework, the students must research an organisation that they admire and share later. I thought it was interesting how Olga mentioned topic and then introduced students to it through activity with something that was more familiar to them (classifieds). The students had also much time to speak with one another and class.
