Nikolas - CO3
Yesterday, I observed my last CIES class. The class was Michelle Downie's Advanced Listening Class. I wanted to see advanced class and needed inspiration for my lesson plan, so this was perfect! Michelle wrote the lesson plan on the board before class for students, then let me introduce myself. After that, all students introduced themselves (first time this happened). My new conversation partner Emin was also in this class. First, students would ask meanings of new words and expressions they heard since last class (something done every class) and had them explained. The students had watched a TED lecture by Al Gore about global warming on Friday and had worksheets about it with vocabulary list on it. They reviewed this and teacher explained some terms. Then students watched the TED lecture video again. This time, 5-6 minutes and write notes, then video was paused and class discussed the section. The teacher wrote some unfamiliar terms on the board and explained cultural references the students may not understand (like a couple references to Charles Dickens). The film was too long to finish, so after last segment, the film was discussed up to point they stopped at. I thought the class was interesting for the students. Although there was work, they had fun too. The teacher told me she likes to use these TED lectures about various topics for the students. The students take short quizes about what they see later. The video clip can be more interesting than the radio or song listening, because the students see what is discussed.
