I have been meeting with my CP once or twice a week now for several weeks. She is really working hard at learning to converse. Her husband usually is also with us and listens as we converse. We talk about their family activities. They recently attended the Flying High Circus which really impressed her. Her son (19 months old) started to clap when they did and he had never done that.
Some words are still puzzling to her such as words with pre- (prepare) and per- (perfect). She is able to catch herself some and exaggerates her pronunciations. When I correct her, she quietly repeats to herself. We also work on words like “heard (herd)” instead of saying “heerd.” We have worked on pronouncing sounds such as “ill (fill not feel).” She is still working on “P” and “B” and we practice how to make the different sounds.
Some words she says, I have no idea what she is saying. I have her write it and finally understand how to help her, such as “prōd.” She was trying to say “proud.” Then she often takes notes in Arabic. I need to remind her to take notes in English which may help her.
What we think we say is not always what others hear us say. I forgot how confusing it is to speak English according to our rules.
Sounds like you are really getting some good experience working on pronunciation issues, as well as sharing some unique culture Americana!
