Jacqi Tp 3

I was working with the kindergartner Soliava and she is showing some real improvement. She was really struggling in the beginning with not just mesmerizing the words but with learning the language. Which I know is acceptable because that is how pretty much everyone learns a second language. But I am happy to say that she is improving dramatically and is really understanding, and not just as a translation of her first language. She now is recognizing patterns of sounds which is really rewarding because she has come such a long way. However she still has a lot of work to do to get on her level at school. She doesn't seem to understand the concept of reading word for word and just guesses a lot on the words and sounds. I am hoping to help her on reading but since she is only in kindergarten I'm not sure I should be too worried.

  1. Do you mean you want her to read word for word, or this is how she reads? I would recommend trying to NOT have her read word for word, but rather for sentence level, and even paragraph level, meaning. Guessing is a good skill that she is utilizing, but try to help her make better guesses by understanding affixes, synonyms, similar sounding words, context, etc.

  2. This sounds very different to work with small children (instead of adults), but interesting to read your experiences.
