Jacqi TP2

I have been tutoring at Ruediger Elementary school for about two weeks now. I usually tutor all three girls (grades 4th, 2nd and kindergarten) together. However in the last couple session I have found it difficult to get the girls attention and to engage them on their different levels. So after Tuesdays tutoring session I decided to tutor them separately so that I can give them my undivided attention. This worked great. Today I worked with Jurie the 2nd grader and we went to the library together. I had her read a book that I picked up and the Goldstein library here on campus. After that we took a break and explored the library together looking at all the displays about black history month and the different books. I then made a work sheet that had blanks for B's and D's and had her fill in the correct letter when I said it. I am learning that since Arabic is read a different direction she is reading backwards sometimes for example reading on as no. Also she is getting her B's and D's backwards which I know is a common problem for many readers, not just those of a second language. I want to work with her comprehension of reading because I have noticed that she knows how to read quite well but she is not understanding what she is reading.

  1. Sounds like you are providing some great individualized instruction. These are also some very good observations you are making about L1 (first language) interference.
